The Power of Urban Agriculture

I think more youth should be involved in community gardening projects across the nation. Gaining access to fresh food is difficult due to socioeconomic barriers that limit access. Over 14 million children across the United States live in food-insecure households according to the USDA. I advocate for more urban agriculture projects because, through my volunteer work with the sustainability program at George Mason University, with their food gardens and greenhouse, I have seen firsthand how locally sourced agriculture is beneficial for reconnecting with nature and maintaining a relationship with our food sources. I believe that locally sourced food production should be even more local than farms; there should be community-based gardens across all neighborhoods, so that people who have limited transportation access and limited resources to buy expensive produce and goods can receive the resources that they need.
